Azucar Moreno

Azucar Moreno

Azúcar Moreno is a spanish music duo, formed by two sisters Encarna and Toñi Salazar, who were born in Badajoz and came from a family with musical heritage.

They started off with their brothers Los Chunguitos, all from gitan origins, until a recording company spotted their talent in 1982.

In 1984 they launched their first album called “ Con la miel en los labios” (honey on your lips) that sold out 50 000 copies in Spain.

In 1986, after Toñi Salazar’s pregnancy, the launch of “ estimúlame” beat the previous 50 000 copies sold. “Carne de melocotón” was the sisters’ 3rd album in 1986. “Debajo de oliva” was their first sucess from this very same album. Thanks to this work they started to experience the sweetness of sucess, with more than 50 000 copies sold in Spain.

In 1990 they were selected to represent Spain during the Eurovision Festival in Zagreb (actual Croatia), with a song called “Bandido”, eventually being ranked on the 5th place at the end of the festival. Their performance during the festival is remembered by the most notorious technical fault in the festival's history. Their performance was supposed to open the contest with pre-recorded soundtracks with drums and basic rhythms, which should have been synchronized with the live orchestra. Unfortunately, due to a Yugoslavian television operator mistake, the duo got on stage when the soundtrack was not ready and therefore the orchestra could not synchronize with the prerecorded music.

Azúcar Moreno’s reaction was to get off the stage when they realized there was a technical fault. After a few seconds of mess, they could start again their performance without any more problems. Bandido was considered as a musical innovation for foreign medias and it also met great sucess in Spain, Latin America, Turkey and in other parts of the world. This album took them to achieve great success. “ Devórame otra vez” and “A caballo” were also great hits of this album, which was sold by 1500 000 copies worldwide.

Their Eurovision performance was followed by numerous successes in Spain and America. Some of their hits entered the Hot Latin chart : "Mambo" (#6) "Te quieres más" (#12) and "Ven devórame otra vez" (#9) The album Mambo ( 1991) ranked at the 5th position in the Latin Pop Albums. Followed by many more very famous albums, such as "Esclava de tu piel" (1996), "Olé" (1998) and "Amén" (2000). In 2006 they tried to represent Spain once more in the Eurovision Festival with the song “Clávame” , but this request was rejected by TVE which chose to give the live performance to Las Ketchup. In these years they also appeared in ad campaigns and in various movies, tv serials.

On the 27th of November, the duo announced its temporary withdrawal from the music industry, as Encarna Salazar was having a chimiotherapy due to a cancer disease. Toñi began a solo career as her sister was recovering. Meanwhile, tabloids depicted a bad relationship between both sisters. Encarna continued her career separately.

In September 2009 they made peace publicly in a program of Antena 3, DEC, even though the reconciliation failed.

In november 2013,they appeared together in the program “Tu cara me suena”, in which their brothers Los Chinguitos, were imitating them as Azucar Moreno. They finally announced their ultimate reconciliation and their comeback with a new album and tour.
