Placido Domingo is famous worldwide because of his different facets as an artist; he performanced 126 roles as a tenor, and currently, he is preparing two new roles in the next three seasons, among them we can find Simon Boccanegra by Giuseppe Verdi. As an administrator, he is the General Manager of the National Opera House in Washington and the Opera House in Los Angeles.
As conductor, he has been on the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, on Covent Garden in London, on the Opera House of the State in Vienna, and Los Angeles among others.
He conducted symphonic music with the Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, the National Symphony, the Symphony Orchestra in London, and the Philharmonic in Berlin.
He made more than 50 musical videos and 4 films about operas as Carmen, La Traviata, Otelo, and Tosca.
Among more than 100 complete opera recordings, arias, and duets, there is the whole anthology of Verdi’s Arias, published by Deutsche Grammophon, and the album where he performs the character of Siegfried in Wagner’s opera.
Lately, he concluded the opera recording Tristan e Isolde for the record house EMI. He has 11 Grammy´s.
His latest recording covers an anthology of “Coplas” in the record Spanish Passion.
Born in Madrid in 1941 from Spanish parents, also singers of Zarzuela music, he went to Mexico when he was 8 years old.
He went to the Music Conservatoire where he studied piano, and conduction, but he strayed to lyric. He made his operatic debut in Monterrey performing the role of Alfredo in La Traviata.
Next, he was in the Opera House of Tel- Aviv during three years, singing 280 performances of 12 different operas. He has singed in the most prestigious world theatres since then.
Placido Domingo was the founder of the International Competition of Operalia Voices ,celebrating this year its sixth anniversary in Quebec , Canada, and of the Program of Young singers Domingo-Cafritz of the National Opera House in Washington.
He was awarded with The Presidential Medal of Liberty of EUA, and named as Major in the Legion of Honour in France and appointed as Honourable Knight of the British Empire. He was also named Honoris Causa Doctor of Oxford and New York Universities because of his contribution to music and arts.
Placido Domingo has collected millions dollars through beneficial concerts to help damaged people in the earthquake of Mexico in 1985, and the victims of the flooding caused by Paulina Hurricane in Guerrero and Yucatan in Mexico and El Salvador.
